HelloFresh Review: Street-Cart-Style Chicken Shawarma Bowls with Bell Pepper, Pistachio Rice & Creamy Cilantro Sauce
I say this every time we order something with an Indian flair to it, but I love this type of cuisine! There is a street-cart chicken recipe I make frequently that has similar ingredients, and I can eat it for lunches and dinners all week long--it always tastes fresh and healthy to me. I'll have to make it sometime soon and share the recipe. In any event, I was excited to try this one and had high expectations for this recipe.
Maybe because HelloFresh is making this for the masses, but we all thought this meal was a little low on flavor--tasted more bland than I expected. It was quick to make, which was a positive, but it needed more spice, in my opinion. The recipe I'm used to has more spice, is made with chicken thighs (which I thinks gives the dish more flavor), and tastes healthier (the sauce is made with greek yogurt and omits sour cream, and the chicken is grilled). The chicken is also marinated for a long time, which I guess isn't possible with a HelloFresh recipe. Now that I think about it, I suppose it isn't fair to compare since the recipes are not the same, but I was a bit disappointed with this one. We all ate it, and it wasn't bad, it just wasn't GREAT. We had a small amount of leftovers, but no one ate them. No one but me said they would order this one again. My favorite part was the pistachio rice--I love pistachios and they gave the dish a nice crunch and provided more depth--my daughter hated it though--guess you can't please everyone!
I'd post the recipe, but don't think this one could be easily re-created, since it came with a packet of HelloFresh spice blend. I don't think it's worth the effort, anyway--there are better recipes like this out there. Sorry, HelloFresh...
